Winston Churchill Said That Democracy Was Not Perfect but...

Winston Churchill said that democracy was not perfect but that it was the best political system available. Was he right? Democracy first appeared in Ancient Greek civilisations, before being wiped out entirely and not returning to western civilisations only until approximately a hundred years ago. One definition given for democracy is a political system that allows the constituents and citizens of a country the right to fairly vote and contribute to the decision of which individuals are ruling and are the governing power. Not only that but also provides citizens protection from the state1. Another definition is given by Abraham Lincoln, in which democracy is viewed as being a government of the people, for the people, by the people†2.†¦show more content†¦This can in the long term lead to the exploitation of the minority, who will not be represented correctly or adequately. Another major criticism of democracy is that in the long term, whilst individuals are in theory voting a particular party, once the party is in power, the situation changes quite differently. The point of democracy is to represent the people and work for their interests. In all the democracies, people vote for a party or a president or to represent them, however once the leadership party are in power, then they in theory, can do what they wish as there is no law or organisation that will prevent them doing so. They become in charge of the small rules and regulations that make up our day to day lives and what they say they will do whilst the voting process is actually going on is not entirely guaranteed. A very recent example of this can be seen in the current governments decision to raise the tuition fees to in some cases almost triple their price before, whilst it was evident in the weeks leading up to the election, the liberal democrats in particular, fought and falsely gained the majority vote of students by arguing that they would attempt to demolish tuition fees, and would prevent any rise in it s costs. We now know the reality is far from this.
